Authorizing a Power of Attorney

Typically a signature guarantee is not required to execute and validate a form for a power of attorney. These forms are, however, notarized in most situations. Each state may have varying regulations on this. It is advisable to seek legal counsel when executing a power of attorney form. This is both to ensure that you understand the legal ramifications, as well as to ensure that all paperwork is completed properly, including the proper form of signature verification - whether it is a signature guarantee, notarization, or other verification.

Can a power of attorney sign a signature guarantee?

The short answer is yes.  Somebody holding power of attorney can typically sign for a signature guarantee.  Be sure to bring a copy of your power of attorney.  The institution issuing the signature guarantee may have specific requirements for documentation (e.g. whether the power of attorney form may be a copy, certified copy, or original).

The person or entity holding the power of attorney will need supporting documentation in order to execute the signature guarantee. Multiple forms of identification, as well as proof of power of attorney will be required. Check with the institution to ensure that you have all supporting documentation.
